Teknaf Upazila (cox's bazar district) with an area of 388.68 sq km, is bounded by hilly area and ukhia upazila on the north, the bay of bengal on the south and west, Naf river and Myanmar on the east. The upazila stands on the south-eastern extremity of Bangladesh and at a distance of 86 km to the south from Cox's Bazar Sadar.

Teknaf (Town) consists of 9 wards and 9 mahallas. The area of the town is 31.53 sq. km; population 18951; male 53.43%, female 46.57%. The density of population per sq km is 601. The literacy rate among the town people is 27.2%. The town has two dakbungalows.



Administration Teknaf thana was turned into an upazila in 1983. It consists of 6 union parishads, 12 mouzas and 133 villages.

Marks of War of Liberation Badhya-bhumi (mass killing site) at Natyangpara.

Population 152557; male 51.81%, female 48.19%; Muslim 96.93%, Hindu 1.19%, Buddhist 1.80%, others 0.08%.

Religious institutions Mosque 183, temple 7, Buddhist keyang 11. Notable institutions: Teknaf Bara Mosque, Aliyabad Jami Mosque, Teknaf Vishnu Mandir, Teknaf Buddha-vihara, Chowdhuripara Buddha-vihara (Qila).

Literacy and educational institutions Average literacy 21.9%; male 28.16%, female 15.65%. Educational institutions: college 3, high school 4, junior high school 5, madrasa 17, primary school (government) 34, primary school (non-government) 11. Old institutions: Teknaf Government Primary School (1890), Teknaf Pilot High School (1945).

Newspapers and periodicals Naf-kantha (defunct).

Cultural organisations Rural club 50, cinema hall 1, playground 11.

Main occupations Agriculture 20.21%, forestry 3.21%, fishery 8.59%, agricultural labour 16.3%, commerce 19.65% service 3.32%, wage labourer 8.21%, others 20.49%.

Land use Cultivable land 11032 hectares, fallow land 1485 hectares, forest land 15961 hectares, shrimp cultivation land 1687 hectares; single crop 81%, double crop land 19%. Cultivable land under irrigation 14%.

Value of land The Market value of the first grade arable land is Taka 12000 per 0.01 hectare.

Main crops Paddy, betel, betel nut, potato.

Extinct and nearly extinct crops Arahar (pulse), onion, mustard, wheat.

Main fruits Mango, jackfruit, banana, papaya, coconut.

Dairies, fisheries and poultries Shrimp cultivation 255, shrimp exhibition and training centre 1, dry fish processing 6, poultry 8, hatchery 7.

Communication facilities Roads: pucca 42 km, semi pucca 30 km and mud road 250 km.

Traditional transport Boat, palanquin (extinct), bullock cart (nearly extinct).

Manufactories Salt mill 1, ice mill 3.

Cottage industries Bamboo and cane work 385, goldsmith 153, blacksmith 50, potteries 150, wood work 140, tailoring 250.

Hats, bazars and fairs Hats and bazars are 13, fair 1, most noted of which are Sabrang hat, Shah Parir Dvip hat, Hoaikyong bazar, Qila Bazar.

Main exports Betel nut, betel leaf, fish, salt.

NGO activities Operationally important NGOs are brac, Red Crescent Society, Shed, VIRK, DASCO, RASHA.

Health centres Upazila health complex 1, satellite clinic 2, family planning centre 3, cholera hospital 1.
